Life Updates & Latest Obsessions: Catching Up on Our Journey
It feels like a moment since our last chat, and I apologize for the slight delay in sharing what’s been happening behind the scenes. Life has been a whirlwind of exciting new experiences, delightful discoveries, and a few ongoing challenges that I’m excited to catch you up on. From celebrating culinary achievements to navigating home decor dilemmas and planning a long-awaited adventure, there’s plenty to unpack. So, grab a cup of your favorite beverage and settle in for a comprehensive look at what’s been occupying my thoughts and time lately. I’m eager to share these snippets of my life, hoping they inspire or simply offer a pleasant escape.
1. A Culinary Milestone: Celebrating “The Pretty Dish” Launch
One of the most thrilling highlights recently was undoubtedly the launch of “The Pretty Dish” cookbook. Witnessing a friend, Jessica, achieve such a monumental feat was incredibly inspiring. I had the immense pleasure of attending her book launch party, a vibrant event filled with fellow food enthusiasts and delicious bites, which technically took place last month but the excitement still resonates. Even more special was being able to join her for a book signing, an experience that deepened my appreciation for the hard work, passion, and creativity poured into every recipe and page. Being a small part of this incredible journey, from seeing her vision come to life to celebrating its success, has been truly rewarding. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of dedication and the joy of sharing culinary artistry with the world. Such events always reignite my own passion for cooking and exploring new flavors, pushing me to experiment more in my own kitchen.
2. Pittsburgh’s Gastronomic Delight: A Brunch Experience at fl.2
Our local culinary scene continues to impress, and a recent brunch at fl.2 further cemented its status as one of my absolute favorite Pittsburgh restaurants. I’ve now visited fl.2 three times, and each experience somehow manages to surpass the last. The ambiance is sophisticated yet welcoming, making it perfect for both special occasions and casual weekend indulgence. Last month, Miguel and I went for brunch, and everything on the menu was simply divine. What made the experience even more memorable for Miguel was their serving of pupusas—a traditional Salvadorian dish—which he absolutely adores. He’s quite particular about them, often claiming it’s the only place in Pittsburgh that truly “makes them right.” Hearing his enthusiastic praise was a win in itself, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our already delightful meal. From their innovative cocktails to their impeccably prepared dishes, fl.2 consistently delivers an exceptional dining experience, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Pittsburgh’s vibrant food landscape.
3. Revolutionizing Home Cooking: The Power of a Tofu Press
Since acquiring a tofu press, our approach to home cooking has undergone a subtle but significant transformation. I wouldn’t go so far as to say we’ve become entirely plant-based, but we’ve consciously started replacing one of our weekly meat meals with a tofu-centric dish, a habit we’ve maintained enthusiastically ever since this post inspired us. The tofu press has been an absolute game-changer, transforming what could sometimes be a bland, watery ingredient into something firm, flavorful, and incredibly versatile. It effectively removes excess water, allowing the tofu to better absorb marinades and achieve a perfectly crispy texture when cooked. If you’ve been on the fence about investing in one, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It simplifies the process of preparing delicious tofu dishes, opening up a world of healthy, satisfying plant-based options that are both easy to make and delightful to eat. It’s a small gadget that has made a big impact on our weekly meal planning and cooking habits.
4. Gripping Narratives: Our Current Binge-Worthy TV Series
Our evenings have been largely consumed by some truly captivating television series. We recently embarked on a major binge-watching journey, devouring all prior seasons of “The Americans” and are now completely caught up with the current, final season. The suspense, the intricate plotlines, and the moral complexities faced by the characters have kept us utterly hooked. The anticipation for how Stan will finally uncover the truth and how the Jennings’ story will conclude is almost unbearable – I truly can’t wait to see how they wrap up such a brilliant show! In parallel, we’ve also been engrossed in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Every single episode of this powerful and often unsettling series leaves me on the edge of my seat, provoking a deep sense of anxiety that, strangely enough, I secretly love for its sheer dramatic intensity. The storytelling is masterful, and the themes are incredibly poignant and relevant. Both shows offer not just entertainment, but a thought-provoking escape into richly crafted narratives that keep us guessing and reflecting long after the credits roll.
5. Cultivating a Green Oasis: Navigating Indoor Plant Challenges
Moving into our new house came with the dream of filling it with lush, vibrant indoor plants. My initial attempt involved purchasing two beautiful plants from Home Depot for the living room, envisioning a natural, calming aesthetic. However, my journey as a plant parent has proven to be quite challenging. Unfortunately, I’ve already managed to kill one, and the other has had to be relocated to the kitchen in a desperate attempt to save it. The primary issue, I’ve discovered, is that while our house boasts wonderful ambient light throughout, there isn’t a single spot where direct sunlight streams in consistently enough for these particular plants to thrive. Despite my best efforts with watering, the lack of ample sun seems to be their undoing. This has led me to seriously consider caving and investing in a few high-quality fake plants. There’s a perfect corner in my living room where a faux tree would look absolutely stunning and add that much-needed touch of greenery without the constant worry. I’ll still keep a few resilient real plants on my window sills, but for the larger statement pieces, it seems I might embrace the title of a proud fake plant owner.
6. An Anticipated Adventure: Our Upcoming Spanish Sojourn
Saving arguably the best news for last – though my memory sometimes plays tricks, so forgive me if I’ve previously mentioned this – Miguel and I are embarking on an incredible trip to Spain next week! My excitement is truly beyond words, as this is a vacation we’ve meticulously planned for quite some time, well before we even considered buying our house. Our original vision for 2018 was designated as “the year of traveling,” with homeownership slated for 2019. However, as life often reminds us, things don’t always unfold according to our meticulously laid plans. We’ve learned to embrace the unexpected twists and turns, finding joy in going with the flow and cherishing this unique period of being new homeowners while simultaneously anticipating this much-needed escape. This trip represents a wonderful opportunity for rejuvenation, cultural immersion, and creating new memories together. I’m incredibly excited and profoundly grateful for the chance to explore a new part of the world and unwind from the daily hustle. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
7. Designing Our Dream Home: Embracing a Thoughtful Decorating Journey
With our impending Spanish adventure just around the corner, most house-related projects have temporarily been put on hold. While we have made significant progress, like acquiring beautiful new living room furniture that perfectly complements our new space, our immediate focus after the trip will be tackling the yard. I envision starting the serious interior decorating sometime next year. I have to admit, I’m quite good at procrastinating when it comes to extensive design projects, primarily because I’m incredibly indecisive. Every room presents a myriad of possibilities, and choosing just one direction feels daunting. However, I’ve come to accept that a well-decorated home isn’t built overnight; it’s a gradual evolution that genuinely reflects your personality and lifestyle. My current priority is fully immersing myself in the excitement of our upcoming vacation, knowing that the house projects will patiently wait. Taking our time to truly understand what we want each room to look like ensures that every design choice is intentional and contributes to creating a home that truly feels like us.
