The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind bar that sets a sophisticated tone. Beyond the bar, diverse seating sections unfold, each boasting a slightly different yet equally stunning aesthetic, from plush banquettes to intimate tables, all contributing to an atmosphere of refined elegance. FL.2 consistently delivers an exceptional dining experience, and for those inclined, their dinner menu is equally remarkable.

For an exceptional Italian dining experience in Pittsburgh, Bar Marco in the Strip District is an absolute standout. This restaurant strikes a perfect balance between sophisticated and welcoming, creating a cozy yet elegant atmosphere that’s ideal for both a romantic date night or a relaxed gathering with friends. One of the most unique and exciting aspects of Bar Marco is their innovative approach to cocktails. While they offer a curated menu, they also provide a “create-your-own” cocktail option. Here’s how it works: you answer a few quick questions about your preferences—like your preferred liquor, whether you like it sweet or strong, and if citrus is okay—and your server relays this to the bartender, who then crafts a personalized, surprise drink just for you. This interactive experience is something I enjoy every single time, and I have yet to be anything but delighted by the results.

Recommendations: The Gnocchi Sardi is a pasta lover’s dream, incredibly rich and satisfying. The Kale Caesar salad offers a fresh and vibrant counterpoint, and for a sweet ending, their Rice Pudding is a surprisingly delightful and comforting dessert.

SOJU – Garfield

Soju, located in the Garfield neighborhood, may be relatively new to the Pittsburgh dining scene, but it quickly earned a top spot on my favorites list after my very first visit. Named after the clear distilled Korean beverage, Soju the restaurant embodies a captivating blend of Korean and American culinary traditions, executed in the most brilliant way possible. As for the actual soju drinks, they are remarkably smooth—almost deceptively so! The food menu is an exciting fusion, offering familiar comfort with exotic twists that truly awaken the palate.

Recommendations: The Killer Tofu is a must-try, even for meat-eaters, bursting with flavor and perfectly textured. The Bibimbap is a classic Korean dish elevated, and, of course, no visit is complete without sampling one of their expertly crafted Soju Cocktails to complement your meal.

SMALLMAN GALLEY – Strip District

Smallman Galley in the Strip District presents a truly unique and dynamic dining concept: it serves as a culinary incubator, providing emerging chefs and restaurateurs with a platform to experiment and innovate in the competitive restaurant business. This innovative model directly benefits customers, offering them the exciting opportunity to choose from four distinct restaurant concepts under one roof. Upon entering, you’ll find a space that resembles a modern and chic food court, with vibrant menus displayed on the walls, allowing you to easily select your desired cuisine. Currently, Smallman Galley hosts concepts specializing in mouthwatering pizza, authentic tacos, fresh Vietnamese dishes, and comforting American cuisine, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every craving. For those exploring other parts of the city, particularly the North Side (perhaps before or after a sporting event), be sure to visit its equally impressive sister restaurant, Federal Galley, which operates on the same successful incubator model.

Recommendations: With such a diverse and rotating selection of incredible restaurants, pinpointing just one recommendation can be challenging, as it truly depends on what you’re in the mood for. However, I can personally vouch for the exceptional pizza from Iron Born Pizza, a consistently delicious choice within the Galley.

MORCILLA – Lawrenceville

Morcilla, located in the bustling Lawrenceville neighborhood, offers an authentic and vibrant taste of Spanish cuisine. Their menu is thoughtfully designed with an abundance of tapas—small, flavorful portions perfect for sampling a wide variety of dishes—alongside larger, family-style options that are ideal for sharing amongst a group. Personally, I almost always opt for the tapas route because there are simply so many delicious creations to explore and enjoy. From traditional favorites to innovative interpretations, each dish is crafted with care and passion. This popular spot tends to fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so making a reservation beforehand is highly recommended. If you find yourself without a reservation, securing a seat at the lively bar is often a fantastic alternative, offering a great vantage point for enjoying the atmosphere and the expertly crafted drinks.

Recommendations: Don’t miss the exquisite Cod Croquetas, perfectly crispy on the outside and creamy within. The Baby Back Pork Ribs are tender and flavorful, while the Lavender Marcona Almonds offer a unique and addictive snack. And of course, a meal at Morcilla would not be complete without enjoying a glass (or pitcher!) of their refreshing Sangria.

ROUND CORNER CANTINA – Lawrenceville

Let me begin by confessing: tacos are my absolute favorite food, which made choosing a top spot incredibly difficult in a city with so many fantastic options. My other beloved taco establishments are listed below, and truly, you can’t go wrong with any of them. However, Round Corner Cantina in Lawrenceville consistently stands out for several reasons. Firstly, it’s wonderfully affordable, offering incredible value without compromising on quality. Secondly, their house salsa is uniquely delicious, boasting a distinct flavor profile that elevates every bite. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, they feature an absolutely fantastic outdoor patio. Seriously, if the weather permits, make a beeline for the patio—it’s an ideal setting for enjoying their vibrant cuisine and refreshing drinks. The lively atmosphere, combined with the exceptional food, makes it a quintessential Pittsburgh dining experience.

Recommendations: While it might not be the most specific advice, I wholeheartedly declare that ALL of their tacos are incredible. You truly cannot pick a bad one. My personal go-to order typically includes a refreshing house margarita, paired with either the flavorful chorizo or succulent shrimp tacos, always accompanied by a generous side of chips and their famous house salsa.

MILLIE’S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM – Shadyside, Downtown, Lawrenceville (coming soon)

Okay, so Millie’s isn’t a traditional dinner spot—it’s an artisanal ice cream shop, but an exceptional one at that. I’ve included it under the “Dinner” category because, for me, dessert often caps off a great meal, and if you find yourself craving truly phenomenal ice cream in Pittsburgh, Millie’s is the place to go. I’m practically a regular, finding myself there once or twice a month, constantly lured in by their ever-changing, imaginative flavors. Their commitment to quality and creativity is evident in every scoop. With established locations in Shadyside and Downtown, and a new one soon to open in Lawrenceville, plus recent pop-up locations like the one in Bakery Square, a delicious Millie’s fix is always within reach, no matter where you are in the city.

Recommendations: My all-time favorites include their rich Peanut Butter, the delicately floral Lavender, and any of their surprisingly creamy and flavorful Vegan ice creams—they are all consistently outstanding.

Other favorite dinner spots include: Gaucho (Strip District), celebrated for its authentic Argentinian wood-fired grilling; Smoke (Lawrenceville), a go-to for mouthwatering BBQ and craft beer; Driftwood Oven (Lawrenceville), offering exquisite, seasonally inspired pizzas; Muddy Waters Oyster Bar (East Liberty), a lively spot for fresh seafood and raw bar delights; and Station (Bloomfield), known for its innovative New American cuisine and inviting ambiance.

PITTSBURGH DRINKS: BARS & NIGHTLIFE

Pittsburgh’s nightlife offers a diverse array of options, from craft breweries to tiki bars and sophisticated cocktail lounges. Whether you’re looking for a casual drink or an immersive experience, these spots promise a memorable evening.

HIDDEN HARBOR AND/OR INDEPENDENT BREWING COMPANY – Squirrel Hill

These two fantastic establishments, located side-by-side in Squirrel Hill and sharing the same ownership, offer completely different yet equally compelling experiences. Hidden Harbor transports you to a vibrant, tropical paradise with its elaborate rum cocktails served in playful, uniquely designed glassware. It’s the perfect destination for a fun group outing, offering an escape from the ordinary. Right next door, Independent Brewing Company embraces a more laid-back, craft beer-focused vibe, showcasing an impressive selection of diverse beers, many sourced from local Pittsburgh breweries. While slightly smaller, its super cozy atmosphere makes it one of my go-to spots when Miguel and I are in the mood for a drink or two. It’s also rather endearing that they often know my order when I walk in – perhaps because I’m famously the only person ordering a margarita at a brewery! You truly can’t go wrong with either venue, and if time allows, I highly recommend popping into both for a contrasting yet equally enjoyable experience.

Recommendations: From Independent Brewing Company, you absolutely must try their margarita—it’s unexpectedly the BEST (yes, really!). Miguel is a fan of any of their crisp Pilsners. At Hidden Harbor, the Oh My Guava and Golden Girl cocktails are fantastic, offering a true taste of the tropics.

ACE HOTEL LOBBY BAR – East Liberty

The lobby bar at the Ace Hotel in East Liberty is more than just a place for a drink; it’s a wonderfully cozy social hub with a fantastic food and cocktail menu. The inviting ambiance is enhanced by comfortable couches, perfect for relaxing conversations. Should those fill up, the hotel also boasts a unique space: an old gym converted into a playful area featuring ping pong, cornhole, and a selection of board games. This lively environment makes it an ideal spot for hanging out with a group of friends, as my friends and I happily discovered after mine and Miguel’s wedding. It offers a relaxed yet engaging atmosphere, blending casual comfort with fun activities.

Recommendations: Be sure to try the expertly crafted Fairweather cocktail and the refreshing Fourth River Mule for a taste of their impressive mixology.

LORELEI – East Liberty

Just a short three-minute walk from the Ace Hotel, Lorelei is another exceptional establishment from the same visionary owners behind Hidden Harbor and Independent Brewing. True to their style, Lorelei offers its own distinct character and ambiance. If you’re in the East Liberty area, it’s definitely worth visiting both spots to experience their unique charms. Lorelei’s ingenious design sets it apart: one side functions as a sophisticated cocktail bar, while the other transforms into a lively beer hall, ensuring there’s something to cater to everyone’s preference. This dual concept makes it a perfect destination for diverse groups looking for quality drinks in a stylish setting.

Recommendations: The Redhead Swizzle cocktail is a vibrant and flavorful choice. They also craft a truly excellent margarita, and their extensive beer selection in the hall side is sure to impress any beer enthusiast.
