Embracing Autumn: A Mid-Year Reflection on Health, Hobbies, and Home
Can you believe it’s already August? The speed at which summer has flown by is truly astounding. While there’s a part of me that eagerly anticipates the crisp air and cozy vibes of fall, I can’t help but feel a touch of nostalgia for the summer days that seemed to slip through my fingers. It often feels like time is accelerating, doesn’t it? As I settle in to share a comprehensive update on life’s happenings from the past couple of months, prepare for a candid dive into my experiences, growth, and a few exciting (and some not-so-exciting) developments. From personal wellness journeys to creative projects and cherished moments, this post aims to offer a transparent glimpse into the whirlwind of life.
My Wellness Journey: Diet, Ailments, and Self-Care
Navigating the Whole30 Experience
My commitment to the Whole30 program continues strong, and surprisingly, it hasn’t been the daunting challenge I initially envisioned. In fact, it’s been a far more manageable and insightful journey than I anticipated. While I’ll delve into a full review—covering both the highs and the lows—once my two weeks are officially complete, one immediate and noticeable benefit has been the significant improvement in my skin clarity. Although my complexion may never be entirely blemish-free, the reduction in breakouts and overall clearer appearance is undeniable. I’m inclined to attribute this positive change primarily to the drastic decrease in my sugar intake, a common culprit for skin inflammation. It’s a welcome side effect, and certainly not something I’m complaining about!
Beyond the aesthetic, the Whole30 has fostered a deeper awareness of how different foods impact my energy, mood, and overall well-being. It’s truly a reset for the body and mind, pushing me to experiment with new recipes and appreciate whole, unprocessed foods. This disciplined approach has not only recalibrated my palate but also encouraged a more mindful relationship with eating. I look forward to sharing detailed insights and practical tips from my experience, including how to transition into “food freedom” gracefully.
Addressing Persistent Health Concerns: My Knee and Headaches
Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, and for me, the past few months have brought a focus on physical recovery and persistent health puzzles. Let’s start with my knee, a relatively new development that has demanded significant attention. A few months ago, I sustained an ankle twist during a barre class, an incident that, unfortunately, left my entire right ankle and knee feeling out of sorts. Just last week, after another barre session involving lunges and various strengthening exercises, my knee decided to protest vigorously. It became swollen and intensely painful to the touch. While it has improved considerably since then, the recovery seems to have hit a plateau. My stubborn nature urges me to give it “one more week,” but I’m increasingly realizing that a consultation with a medical professional, perhaps a sports medicine specialist or physical therapist, might be essential for a full and lasting recovery. Listening to our bodies, even when it means facing inconvenient truths, is paramount for long-term health.
Then there are the headaches—a less-than-exciting, yet persistently frustrating, part of my life. Yes, they continue, though I’m relieved to report a noticeable improvement since starting Whole30. However, I’m not convinced that dietary changes alone will completely eradicate them. My quest for relief is multifaceted: I have an appointment with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist later this week, a headache specialist booked for November (the earliest availability, testament to the complexity of chronic pain), and I’m even considering a lymphatic drainage massage. Why not explore every possible avenue? To anyone else enduring chronic headaches, my heart goes out to you. I understand the profound annoyance and frustration they cause, especially for those whose experiences are far more severe than my own. Please know you are not alone in this struggle, and your resilience is truly inspiring.
The Decision to Cut Out Coffee
In a significant shift, I’ve largely eliminated coffee from my daily routine, and to my surprise, I only somewhat miss it. This decision was purely strategic. While coffee can be a lifeline for many, caffeine is a well-known trigger for recurrent headaches in susceptible individuals. Fortunately for me, my consumption was limited to just one cup a day, so the transition wasn’t as drastic as it might be for others, and I’ve barely noticed a dip in my energy levels. What I truly miss is the ritual—the comforting aroma, the warmth of the mug, and the “wake up, drink coffee” morning routine. However, I am slowly but surely adjusting to new morning rituals. I should clarify, though: I’ve cut out regular coffee, not all coffee for eternity. There have been a couple of instances in the past few weeks where I enjoyed a cold brew, and happily, experienced no ill effects. This suggests a potential path for occasional indulgence, which is certainly a silver lining!
Creative Pursuits and Social Connections
Exploring the World of Interior Photography
Beyond my long-standing passion for food photography, a new creative avenue has recently captured my interest: interior photography. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of working on some interior photo shoots, and I’m genuinely beginning to fall in love with this craft. While food will always hold a special place as my number one subject, capturing the essence and design of a physical space is proving to be incredibly rewarding. It presents a different set of challenges and artistic considerations, from playing with natural light to highlighting architectural details and telling a story through design elements. The website showcasing these projects hasn’t launched yet, but I promise to share the link as soon as it does. It’s exciting to expand my creative repertoire and explore new dimensions of visual storytelling.
Building Connections: Meeting Fellow Bloggers
Switching gears to something less medically inclined, I had a delightful meetup with Sarah, a wonderful fellow Pittsburgh blogger, a couple of weeks ago. We chose to visit The Vandal, and the experience was truly lovely. There’s a unique joy in transitioning internet connections into real-life friendships. It’s always inspiring to connect with others who share similar creative passions and understand the unique world of blogging. These in-person interactions provide fresh perspectives, shared laughs, and a sense of community that digital exchanges, while valuable, can’t fully replicate. Building these local networks enriches both personal and professional life significantly.
Home Sweet Home: A Duvet Update
In a long-overdue home improvement, Miguel and I finally invested in a new duvet cover! Our previous one, though only four years old, had seen better days. Originally a crisp white and blue, it had gradually transformed into a rather unappealing cream and blue, thanks in large part to our beloved dog, Layla. Yes, I’m blaming my furry friend 100 percent, and I have absolutely no regrets. After much deliberation, we settled on a simple, classic gray design. Sometimes, the simplest choices bring the most satisfaction. A fresh duvet cover instantly elevates the feel of the bedroom, creating a cleaner, more inviting sanctuary. It’s a small change that makes a big difference in daily comfort and aesthetic appeal, proving that even minor updates can significantly enhance our living spaces.
Celebrating Love: Our Anniversary Staycation
Speaking of Miguel, we recently celebrated two significant milestones: our first wedding anniversary and our sixth dating anniversary! It’s reassuring to confirm that being married feels wonderfully similar to dating—a testament to the strong foundation we’ve built. To mark the occasion, we opted for a charming little staycation right here in Pittsburgh. We enjoyed a relaxed downtown experience, indulging in our shared love for food with an evening of delicious tacos, refreshing margaritas, and decadent milkshakes. It was the perfect low-key celebration, reflecting our mutual appreciation for good company, great food, and each other’s companionship. These moments of intentional celebration, whether grand or simple, are crucial for nurturing relationships and creating lasting memories.
Collaborating on Sweet Peas Meals: A Creative Highlight
As many of you may already know, I had the incredible opportunity to assist Jessica and Maria with some photography and food styling for their exciting project, Sweet Peas Meals. Seeing the tremendous enthusiasm and positive reception from people about this venture has been incredibly heartwarming and genuinely exciting for me too. It’s always a privilege to collaborate with such talented individuals and contribute to a project that brings healthy, delicious food to a wider audience. The process of styling food to look appealing and capture it beautifully through the lens is a creative challenge I deeply enjoy, and the collective energy around Sweet Peas Meals has been truly inspiring.
Entertainment Corner: My Latest Binge-Watching List
When it’s time to unwind, curling up with a good show is often my go-to. Here’s what Miguel and I have been watching lately:
- The Handmaid’s Tale: I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect with this series, but the sheer suspense and gripping narrative quickly drew me in. It’s a powerfully intense show that challenges viewers and sparks deep thought. I absolutely loved the first season and am eagerly anticipating season two. Highly recommended for those who appreciate compelling dystopian dramas.
- Orange Is The New Black: Will this show ever cease to be amazing? Each season continues to impress. The latest season was, as always, so incredibly good, and I particularly appreciated how it seamlessly picked up right where the previous season left off, maintaining its signature blend of humor, drama, and social commentary.
- Friends: Yes, you read that right. We’ve embarked on a full re-watch of every single episode! We’re currently only on season four, but I have a strong feeling we’ll breeze through the entire series faster than you’d imagine. It’s the ultimate comfort show, timeless in its humor and heartwarming camaraderie.
- Glow: This relatively new Netflix series caught our attention, and we really enjoyed it. While it might not be an edge-of-your-seat thriller or a laugh-until-you-cry comedy, it offers plenty of chuckle-worthy moments and a genuinely entertaining premise. It’s a fun, lighthearted watch with a surprising amount of heart, perfect for a relaxed evening.
Looking Forward: Embracing New Chapters
These experiences, though perhaps not overtly thrilling, represent the rich tapestry of a busy and evolving life. From confronting health challenges and seeking solutions to embracing new creative outlets and cherishing personal milestones, each moment contributes to a larger narrative of growth and discovery. As August draws to a close and we look towards the vibrant embrace of autumn, I’m filled with a sense of anticipation for what new chapters await. Here’s to making the most of every season and finding excitement in the everyday. What have you been up to recently? Share your highlights in the comments below!
