Embracing Summer’s Rhythm: A July Journey Through Milestones and Moments

As I sit down to reflect on the past month, a familiar thought echoes in my mind: “How did we get here so fast?” Each passing month feels like a whirlwind, and July was no exception, brimming with a unique blend of personal celebrations, cherished friendships, and exciting professional endeavors. It’s a broken record, I know, but time truly does fly when you’re navigating life’s adventures. Let’s delve into the highlights and happenings that made July a month to remember, capturing the essence of summer, connection, and progress.

Celebrating Love and Milestones: Our Second Wedding Anniversary

July 2nd marked a truly special milestone for Miguel and me: our second wedding anniversary! It’s incredible how quickly these two years have flown by since we exchanged vows. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating our big day, and now here we are, already marking another year of married bliss. This year, with the recent excitement of purchasing our first home and the unforgettable adventures of our trip to Spain still fresh in our minds, we decided to embrace a more understated, intimate celebration. We wanted to savor the quiet moments and reflect on our journey.

Admittedly, the day wasn’t entirely free from external pressures. A few pressing work deadlines loomed before the upcoming July 4th holiday, meaning I spent a good portion of the morning diligently working to ensure everything was in order. While it felt a little “lame” to be working on such a significant day, it was a necessary task that ultimately allowed us to fully relax later. Despite the brief interruption, the day remained absolutely lovely. We made sure to carve out quality time, heading to a beloved local spot for a delightful lunch. We indulged in incredible food, enjoying each other’s company and the simple pleasure of a shared meal. It truly underscores what special occasions are all about: delicious food, cherished company, and of course, a deep sense of love and appreciation for one another. Perhaps it’s 50% love and 50% phenomenal food, in the best possible way!

A Different Kind of Independence Day: Navigating the Fourth of July

This year’s Fourth of July celebration presented a rather unique turn of events, marking one of the first times I didn’t experience the traditional fireworks display. Our usual tradition involves attending the Riverhounds game, a ritual we’ve thoroughly enjoyed over the past few years. We had meticulously planned to stay after the game to witness the spectacular pyrotechnics that typically light up the night sky. However, Mother Nature had other plans. A significant storm rolled in, bringing with it an impressive show of thunder and lightning. Despite the absence of actual rain, the game faced a staggering delay of several hours. The anticipation turned into a lengthy wait, and eventually, we made the collective decision to leave.

Instead of waiting indefinitely for the fireworks, we pivoted our plans and headed to a local bar, embracing a spontaneous change of pace. While they did eventually launch the fireworks, we hadn’t anticipated it after such a prolonged delay. Initially, there was a slight tinge of disappointment at missing our usual spectacle, but it quickly faded. We realized that the essence of the holiday wasn’t solely dependent on fireworks. We still had a fantastic night, enjoying the company, the festive atmosphere, and the joy of a long weekend. It was a good reminder that sometimes the best memories are made when plans take an unexpected, yet delightful, detour.

Cherished Connections: Friends Visiting Pittsburgh

July was a wonderful month for reconnecting with dear friends, starting with my friend Candice, who graced Pittsburgh with her presence for a full week. As an educator, she enjoys her summers off, and it was an absolute joy to spend quality time with her. We make an effort to see each other a few times throughout the year, but having the opportunity to connect multiple times within the same week felt extra special. We explored parts of the city, shared countless laughs, and simply reveled in each other’s company. These visits are always a much-needed refresh, reminding me of the enduring power and comfort of long-standing friendships.

A Bachelorette Celebration in Columbus: Candice’s Special Weekend

Building on the joy of Candice’s visit, July also brought another exciting event: her bachelorette party! Candice resides in Columbus, and she made the brilliant decision to host her celebration there, which made the logistics incredibly simple for everyone involved. We rented a fantastic Airbnb, creating a cozy and central hub for our weekend festivities. The celebration itself was wonderfully low-key, perfectly reflecting Candice’s relaxed personality, yet it was filled with so much fun and warmth. Our activities included lounging by the pool, which was a perfect way to beat the summer heat and enjoy some relaxed conversation. We also ventured out for a workout class, which was a surprisingly energizing and fun group activity. Evenings were dedicated to delightful dinners and drinks, allowing us to catch up, share stories, and celebrate Candice as she embarks on this exciting new chapter. It was truly great to spend time with her and get to know her other friends, fostering new connections and strengthening existing ones.

Bittersweet Farewells: A College Friend Moves On

On a more bittersweet note, July concluded with the departure of another dear friend who had been staying with us. As I mentioned in last month’s recap, she had taken a summer position in Pittsburgh and was living in our guest room. Her presence brought a wonderful energy to the house, and it was lovely to have a familiar face around. However, she recently accepted a position back home, which meant saying our goodbyes. She moved out her belongings on Sunday, and the house has already begun to feel noticeably quieter. While we are incredibly happy for her new opportunity, it’s always hard to say farewell. Most of my college friends no longer reside in Pittsburgh, so having her around for a few weeks was a cherished experience, bringing back memories and creating new ones. It’s a testament to the strong bonds forged during those formative years, even as life leads us down different paths.

Furnishing Our Home: The Quest for Patio Perfection

A significant victory on the home front this month was finally finding patio furniture I could truly live with! Making large purchase decisions for the house is often a challenging and time-consuming process for me. I tend to overthink and spend an exorbitant amount of time sifting through options, comparing styles, and weighing practicality against aesthetics. The patio furniture was no exception, and I agonized over it for far too long. However, I’m thrilled to report that we’ve made substantial progress! We’ve managed to acquire a comfortable couch for our inviting front porch, perfect for enjoying morning coffee or evening breezes. Additionally, we found a lovely table and chairs for our back deck, envisioning countless al fresco meals and gatherings. We haven’t completed furnishing every outdoor space yet, but we are definitely getting there, piece by beautiful piece, slowly transforming our house into a fully functional and stylish home.

A Culinary Canvas: Photography for fl.2’s Guest Chef Dinner

On a professional note, July presented a fantastic opportunity that perfectly blended my passion for photography with my love for food. I had the distinct pleasure of photographing one of my absolute favorite restaurants, fl.2, for their exclusive guest chef dinner event. This was truly a remarkable culinary experience, bringing together fl.2’s esteemed head chef with four other incredibly talented chefs—some hailing from Pittsburgh, others from different cities. This collective of culinary masters collaborated to craft an imaginative and utterly delicious dinner menu that showcased their diverse skills and creative flair. As expected, every single dish was a masterpiece, both visually and gastronomically. Miguel and I had an absolute blast, not only enjoying the exquisite food and vibrant atmosphere but also appreciating the intricate artistry behind each plate. It’s always incredibly rewarding when my work allows me to immerse myself in such enriching and delightful experiences.

Entertainment Unwind: Diving into TV Series

When it came to unwinding with entertainment this month, our TV habits were quite focused. Currently, we’re engrossed in “Orange is the New Black.” It’s an intriguing series that combines drama with sharp wit, keeping us thoroughly entertained. That’s pretty much it for our active viewing right now, as we recently wrapped up another compelling series a few weeks ago: “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Oh my god, that show is absolutely insane! The narrative is incredibly powerful, thought-provoking, and at times, intensely disturbing. It left a profound impression on both of us. While the ending felt a bit ridiculous in its execution, almost an abrupt pivot, I truly can’t get over just how exceptionally good the show itself is. The performances, the cinematography, the intricate storytelling – it all culminates in a television experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. It sparked so many conversations and reflections, proving its undeniable impact.

Looking Forward: August on the Horizon

And with that, I believe I’ve pretty much summed up the rich tapestry of experiences that defined this past month! July was a whirlwind of personal joys, shared moments, and exciting challenges. As we transition into August, I’m anticipating another busy schedule, but it’s all filled with positive and exciting prospects, so I’m absolutely ready to embrace whatever comes next. I sincerely hope that all of you are savoring these beautiful summer days as much as I am attempting to! May your August be filled with warmth, happiness, and unforgettable moments.
